MAPPING BAUHAUS COUPLINGS

Invitation_revised.jpg

Content

Considering the hundredth anniversary year of the Staatliches Bauhaus, and that DIA is situated right next to the Dessau Building, we will dive into the gendered landscape of this institution.

The Bauhaus not only married art, craftsmanship and industry but also gave place to over seventy couplings in a short time. And that number does not include the numerous extra-marital affairs. Often, the couples complemented each other professionally as well as intimately, but the fact is that women acted mainly in their husband's shadows. Some relationships lasted a lifetime like Ise and Walter Gropius, and others went their separate ways like Lucia and László Moholy-Nagy. What were the contributions of each member in the coupling? And, what was it about the Bauhaus that contributed to these associations? Despite its gender biased pedagogical structure, the Bauhaus also shaped the architectural field through its social events of house parties and festivals.

Methodology

Through historical research, each participants will analyse a case study of a Bauhaus coupling in relation to a pedagogy/event at the Bauhaus. Together, they will design all the element involved in an educative costume party for fellow students and guests.

Mission

With the mapping of the Bauhaus couplings, they will unravel gender issues of architectural education and practice, and critically review the role of universities in shaping students through both formal and informal institutional approaches.
